Studio Ochenta presents: Atlas Linguae. Season 3

Announcing Season 3 of Atlas Linguae!

Atlas Linguae is Studio Ochenta’s leading podcast about language, culture, and communication. Host Luis Lopez explores Kpop song translation with BTS army, what makes a story successful across languages with folks from Disney Pixar’s writers, how to translate what your cat is trying to tell you with an animal therapist, and so much more. Its a show about the confusing, wonderful and weird world of language, and for this brand new season we’ve decided to dive deep into the language of culture online!

For season 3 we’re interviewing content creators from different countries, who document their daily lives and cultural backgrounds on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. We’ll learn how TikTok creators such as Yemeni-American comedian Ahmed Al-kadri (@ahmedlovesbread) and Japanese-Brazilian Kenzo Mizumoto (@kenzomizumoto) find their unique sources of humor. We’ll also discover how Buzzfeed “Pero Like” alums Maya Murillo (@mayainthemoment) and Gadiel del Orbe (@gadieldelorbe) overcame obstacles to find their voices in a multicultural Latinx platform. And so much more!

Reclaiming the word “pocha” with Maya Murillo

Atlas Linguae Season 3 is all about the language of culture online, and for our first episode we talk to Maya Murillo (@mayainthemoment), who truly embodies the joys and challenges of exploring your identity on the internet. Originally from Phoenix and based in Los Angeles, Maya is an actor, musician, and content creator who worked for several years as a producer at Buzzfeed’s “Pero Like” channel. Maya shares her journey as she became more comfortable documenting her life and struggles on video, and explains why speaking Spanglish and being a “pocha” is a key part of her identity.

 
 

Why playing anime soundtracks under your videos makes them twice as funny, with Kenzo Mizumoto

Both in his everyday life and in his videos, comedy content creator Kenzo Mizumoto (@kenzomizumoto) loves to challenge stereotypes in a fun way. Born in Brazil to a family of Japanese descent, and currently living in London, Kenzo has found success on Instagram and TikTok, where he has made hilarious videos about Asian stereotypes in martial arts movies, cultural peculiarities of life in the UK, and, of course, millennial problems. In our conversation, Kenzo shares how he enhances the humor in his videos, as well as how he loves having the chance to talk about his cultural identity to people who may not know about the large Japanese community in Brazil.

 
 

Australia by way of Ireland and Palestine, with Bernadette Kirwan

Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, to a Palestinian mother and an Irish father, content creator Bernadette Kirwan’s upbringing was, while fascinating, a lot more complex than that of even most multicultural people. Bernadette (@bernadette.kirwan) makes shortform video content on Instagram and TikTok, where she often both celebrates and finds humor in her different cultural backgrounds, and in our interview she talks about her unique journey into learning about and appreciating all the cultural roots that she embodies.

 
 

Dominican-flavored humor, with Gadiel del Orbe

If there’s one part of our interview with Gadiel del Orbe that encompasses what he’s all about, it’s that he will sometimes literally dream of Dominican food. The actor, comedian, and content creator talks to us about his work at Buzzfeed’s Pero Like, where he became well-known for both his multicultural comedy and deep dives into culture and politics. We also talk about his improvisation-heavy approach to humor, which was particularly notable in his work in La Cabina Telefónica, the show produced by Studio Ochenta for Spotify where he played the hilarious and charismatic role of, well, Gadiel.

 
 
 

Living, thriving, and raising a family in Germany as a Mexican, with YoAndy

When Mexican YouTuber YoAndy left for Germany, she thought she would spend a short amount time of there, basically to practice the language for a little bit before returning to work in her hometown of Puebla. Now, several years later, she’s raising a family in Germany and fluent in German, though she’s still fascinated by the ways that the language behaves from her own mother tongue, which she makes an effort to pass on to her children. We talk about her favorite cultural differences, the challenges of preserving your language in a foreign country, and the things she misses most from home.

 
 
 

How to be a successful accountant when your parents want you to be a comedian, with Ahmed al-Kadri

Ahmed al-Kadri is a Yemeni-American comedian who loves to delve into all sorts of topics in his content, from your usual millennial angst to the unique situations that arise when you are a Muslim in the United States. Everything from fasting for Ramadan to having to identify as white on the US census is fair game in his content on social media (@ahmedlovesbread). In this episode we hear about how Ahmed developed his sense of humor early by growing up in a family with quite effortless comedic timing, as well as how to find the right balance to make a joke funny for Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

 
 
 

How to teach Korean while having fun, with Buster Moon

The rise of Korean pop culture on a global scale, with everything from BTS to Squid Game, has gotten many people around the world excited about learning Korean, despite its challenges in terms of learning a new alphabet and grammar rules. And Buster Moon, today’s guest on Atlas Linguae is working to maintain his students’ enthusiasm for the language. Buster Moon is a Korean language teacher and content creator based in Canada, and his content focuses on teaching short and useful words and phrases for everyday conversation. In our conversation, he talks about the importance of consistency when learning any language—especially one with unique challenges such as Korean—and about what it is that made Korean media so popular internationally in the first place.

 
 

Multilingual Humor from an Arabic lens, with Toufic Braidis

Toufic is a Lebanese content creator based in London. His content is as hilarious as it is culturally specific, and can bring a smile to your face regardless of if you speak Arabic. In our conversation, we talked about what he misses the most from his hometown of Beirut and how he has found his voice for his mostly Arabic-speaking audience.

Beverly Adaeze is a content creator, travel vlogger, wedding MC, and hairstylist born in Lagos, Nigeria, and raised in Houston, Texas. Her content is a mix of travel tips, Nigerian culture, and humor. In our conversation, we talked about her different talents and how they benefit each other, as well as some of her favorite trips.

For this episode, we have not one, but TWO guests: two Latinos who are great writers, actors, comedians, collaborators, but above all, friends: Michael Díaz and Jaime Fernández.

Michael (@juanbago) is the creator behind the hilarious Juan Bago, a Dominican New Yorker best known for his candid “man-on-the-street” style of comedy. He and Jaime (@jfernz), who co-wrote and co-directed the Audible series “Michelle Rojas is not Okay” are both cohosts of the “Translators Podcast” (@translatorspodcast), an interview show centered on in-depth conversations with Latine creators.

Bilingualism in Ukraine: A Tale of Two Languages
